Saving Your Dog's Life: CPR Basics

First off, it's important to know that giving CPR to a dog isn't the same as giving it to a human. Let's learn how to do CPR for dogs.

How to Tell If Your Dog Needs CPR:

  • Check for Response: See if your dog responds when you call or touch them. If they don't react, they're unresponsive.
  • Breathing Check: Check if their breathing seems normal. If they're not breathing, they need help.
  • Pulse Check: Feel for their pulse by their inner thigh or listen to their heartbeat by placing your ear on their chest. No heartbeat means you need to act fast.

A Quick Check Using "ABC":

  • Airway: Gently tilt their head back to open their airway and remove any blockages.
  • Breathing: Check if they're breathing.
  • Circulation: See if they have a pulse.

How to Do CPR for Dogs:

If the airway is clear but they're not breathing and their gums look bluish, you need to do CPR.

  • Lay the dog on their right side.
  • If they have a pulse, give up to 5 breaths into their nostrils. This might be enough to help them start breathing again.
  • If there's no pulse, start with 30 quick chest compressions.

When to Start CPR:

If your dog is unconscious and not breathing, it's time to start CPR.

How to Give Chest Compressions:

Press down on their chest firmly and quickly, about 30 times. Then, give a couple of breaths.

Where to Give Compressions:

Refer to the infographic to know where to press on your dog's chest. For dogs with flat chests like bulldogs, they might need to be on their back, but it's best to have someone help you.

Make sure you compress the chest to about 1/3 to 1/2 of its width at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute. Let the chest fully rebound after each press.

If you notice signs, contact animal hospital near me and address the issue promptly.

Keep doing compressions and rescue breaths until you feel a heartbeat and regular breathing. Once your pet recovers and starts breathing again, consult your vet for further advice.
